About this piece

Six tiles side by side and every one is a different brown. One holds a warm chestnut with the glaze thin enough to show what's underneath. Another goes almost black where it pooled at an edge. A third has a bloom of deep oxblood across the middle. This is what the glaze does on its own in the kiln, and it is why a brown zellige wall never reads as one flat colour — it reads as depth, wet-looking under direct light and dark and quiet away from it. Turn a tile over and you find a pale cream clay body, hand-formed, with the thickness varying visibly from one edge to another. This is Fès, where zellige has been made this way for centuries. Twenty-five tiles at 10×10cm, covering 50×50cm.

What Makes It

  • Every tile is a different brown — chestnut, oxblood, near-black, sometimes two of them on the same tile. Set twenty-five together and the wall has movement a printed tile cannot produce at any price.
  • The gloss is uneven, on purpose — the glaze breaks into high-shine pools and matte patches depending on how thick it sat. That's why brown zellige catches light like liquid across a backsplash instead of going flat.
  • Hand-formed body, visible thickness variation — the unglazed back shows a pale cream clay, formed by hand, with edges that aren't perfectly square. That irregularity is what gives a laid zellige wall its handmade line.
  • Brown is the hardest colour to source well — most manufacturers give you one uniform brown that reads as cheap. This runs a range within a single wall, which is why designers specify handmade zellige for it.
  • Pairs with copper and unlacquered brass — the warm tones in the glaze pick up warm metal directly. Backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, bathroom walls, and accent walls.
  • Sold in 50×50cm panels — 25 tiles, 0.25m² of coverage. Order the panel count you need and add 10–15% for cuts and breakage, as with any tile.

The Craft

Zellige begins as clay dug from the ground around Fès, formed by hand, dried in the sun, then fired. The glaze is applied by hand and fired again, and what comes out is a range rather than a match — the same glaze on the same clay in the same kiln produces variation the potter cannot fully direct. Moroccan tile setters have worked with that range for centuries; the pattern language of zellige exists because craftsmen learned to compose with variation instead of against it. The imperfection is not tolerated. It is the material.
