A Special Gift with a Special Story

The Kilimy Moroccan ceramic oil burner is a small glazed red clay cube, 7 cm wide and 7 cm high (2.8 x 2.8 in), with pierced sides, a tealight space below and a dish on top for scented oil. It is shaped by hand and fired in Marrakesh, Morocco, by Mohamed Ou.

A tealight warms the dish, and the pierced sides let the flame glow through. It comes in yellow, black, turquoise and red, as a single burner, a pair or a set of four. Each order ships from Morocco with a Kilimy Origin Passport naming its maker, and duties and taxes are included on US orders.

Options for all curators

This Moroccan oil burner comes in one size, 7 x 7 cm (2.8 x 2.8 in), so the choice is how many.

  • Single burner: one for a bedside table or a desk.
  • Pair: a gift, or one for each of two rooms.
  • Set of four: several rooms, or several small gifts from one order.

How it is made and who makes it

An oil burner, also called an essential oil burner or scent burner, is a small holder that warms scented oil over a tealight. This one is shaped by hand from red clay in Marrakesh, Morocco, by Mohamed Ou., then glazed and fired. Because it is handmade, the glaze and the shape vary slightly from one burner to the next.

The maker describes the pieces this way: "These handmade pieces are unique gifts that are original and carry meaning and heritage."

Kilimy has verified the maker and the city. Both are recorded on the Origin Passport that ships with every order.

How to use it, and how to care for it

This ceramic oil burner warms scented oil in its top dish over a tealight.

  • Fill the dish: add water and a few drops of scented oil, or use scented oil on its own. Do not use wax melts.
  • Light the tealight: place a standard tealight in the space below the dish and light it.
  • Keep it topped up: never let the dish run dry over a lit flame.
  • Stay safe: the London Fire Brigade advises never leaving candles and oil burners unattended. Stand the burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains and anything that can catch fire, and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Clean it: let it cool fully, then wash it by hand.

Questions

How do you use a ceramic oil burner?

Put water and a few drops of scented oil, or scented oil on its own, in the top dish. Place a lit standard tealight in the space below. Never let the dish run dry while the tealight burns.

Do I add water to the oil?

You can do either. The maker approves water with a few drops of scented oil, or scented oil on its own, in the top dish of this burner.

Can I use wax melts in this burner?

No. This burner is made for scented oil, with or without water. The maker does not approve wax melts for it.

How big is it, and which candle does it take?

The burner is 7 cm wide and 7 cm high (2.8 x 2.8 in). It takes a standard tealight, which is not included.

Is it safe to leave an oil burner lit?

No. The London Fire Brigade advises never leaving candles and oil burners unattended. Put it out before you leave the room or go to sleep.

Will my burner look exactly like the photo?

Not exactly. Each burner is shaped and glazed by hand, so the color and shape vary slightly from piece to piece.

Even more beautiful in person

The pieces look even more beautiful in person, especially when they are lit. The fact that you noticed the crack during your final quality check and chose to replace the piece rather than send it to me says a lot about the standards you have for your work. The letter from you and the certificate of verified origin were also a wonderful touch.
