Moroccan Couscous Serving Plate, Hand-Painted Fès Ceramic, 28 cm

Where it comes from

What is Fès pottery?

Fès pottery is glazed ceramic made in Fès (also spelled Fez), Morocco, from the region's white clay and painted by hand. This plate is painted in sweeping green and pale blue leaves, with fine yellow lines and small clusters of red, yellow and blue dots meeting at a six-point star in the center, inside a deep green rim.

Mohamed Cheriff A. paints every line by hand, so the pattern differs slightly from one plate to the next. Kilimy verified the maker and the city in September 2026.

Made for the table, not just the shelf

Fès white clay, fired hot

A thick body fired at a high temperature. Our artisan team chose this clay because it stands up to daily contact with liquids better than terracotta.

Painted by hand

Every leaf and dot is painted by hand in Fès, so no two plates are exactly alike.

Size and servings

How big is it, and how many does it serve?

At 28 cm (11 in) across, it is about the width of a large dinner plate, with a 4 cm (1.6 in) dip in the middle that keeps grains, broth and sauce on the plate.

  • Serves: couscous for about 4 people
  • Diameter: 28 cm (11 in)
  • Depth: 4 cm (1.6 in)
  • Weight: about 800 g (1.8 lb)
  • A pair: two plates for a table of eight, or one for the couscous and one for the salads

What to serve on it

  • Couscous: a mound of steamed couscous with vegetables and meat, the way it is shared from one plate at a Moroccan table.
  • Tagine: spoon a chicken tagine with preserved lemon and olives onto it once it has cooked.
  • Moroccan salads: zaalouk, taktouka or carrot salad for a spread of small dishes.
  • Fruit and sweets: figs, grapes, dates or chebakia after the meal.

It is a serving plate, not a cooking dish, so cook in your tagine or pot and serve on the plate.

A gift for someone who cooks Moroccan food

For the friend who makes couscous for the whole family, or who came back from Morocco and still talks about the food, this is a plate they will actually cook for. It arrives with an Origin Passport naming Mohamed Cheriff A. and Fès, so they know exactly who painted it and where.

Gift wrapping with a note in your words can be added after purchase. US orders arrive with duties and taxes already paid, so there is nothing for them to pay at the door.

Care

  • Wash it in the dishwasher or by hand with warm, soapy water.
  • Warm food on it in the microwave as you would on any plate.
  • Avoid long exposure to high heat, such as the oven, the broiler or a stovetop. Long high heat can crack the glazed surface.

Questions

What size plate do you need to serve couscous for four?

About 28 cm (11 in) across with a shallow dip. This Fès plate is 28 cm (11 in) in diameter and 4 cm (1.6 in) deep, and serves couscous for about four people. For eight, order the pair.

Is this Moroccan plate dishwasher and microwave safe?

Yes. The plate can go in the dishwasher, and you can warm food on it in the microwave.

Can it go in the oven?

It is not recommended. It is a serving plate, not a cooking dish, and long exposure to high heat, such as in the oven, the broiler or on a stovetop, can crack the glazed surface. Cook in your tagine or pot, then serve on the plate.

What else can I serve on a Moroccan couscous plate?

Tagines, once cooked, Moroccan salads such as zaalouk and taktouka, roasted vegetables, fruit, dates and Moroccan sweets. The 4 cm (1.6 in) depth holds sauce and broth.

What is the difference between Fès white clay and terracotta?

Fès white clay fires to a pale body that holds hand-painted color clearly. This plate has a thick body fired at a high temperature, which our artisan team chose because it stands up to daily contact with liquids better than terracotta.

Is every plate exactly the same?

No. Mohamed Cheriff A. paints each plate by hand in Fès, so the leaves, lines and dots differ slightly from one plate to the next. Two plates in a pair will match in design but not line for line.

Is it a good gift for someone who loves Moroccan cooking?

Yes. It is sized for a real family couscous, it is dishwasher and microwave safe, and it arrives with an Origin Passport naming the maker. Gift wrapping with a note can be added after purchase, and US orders arrive with duties and taxes already paid.

Even more beautiful in person

The pieces look even more beautiful in person, especially when they are lit. The fact that you noticed the crack during your final quality check and chose to replace the piece rather than send it to me says a lot about the standards you have for your work. The letter from you and the certificate of verified origin were also a wonderful touch.
