Handcrafted in Tamegroute

Tamegroute candle holders in speckled ochre yellow

These Tamegroute candle holders are handmade ceramic candlesticks for taper candles, shaped like small tree trunks with branch stubs and finished in a speckled ochre yellow glaze. Each one stands between 15 and 20 cm tall (5.9 to 7.9 in). Abdelhak Az. shapes them by hand in Tamegroute, Morocco.

Choose a pair, a set of three or a set of four. Heights are mixed, so no two holders in a set are identical. Candles are not included. Gift wrapping with a note can be added after purchase, every order ships with a Kilimy Origin Passport naming the maker, and duties and taxes are included on US orders.

Tamegroute Candle Holders, Ochre Yellow Ceramic Taper Candlesticks

Where they come from

What is Tamegroute pottery?

Tamegroute pottery is glazed ceramic made in Tamegroute, a village in the Draa valley about 20 km from Zagora in southern Morocco. The village is also the historic center of the Nasiriyya Sufi order, whose zawiya has been a place of teaching since the 1640s.

Abdelhak Az. shapes each candle holder by hand, branch stubs and all, before it is glazed and fired. The ochre yellow glaze pools and speckles differently on every piece, so expect drips, dark flecks and small differences in height and shape.

The maker describes his work this way: "These pieces carry years of heritage and weeks of patience."

Fit and size

Which candles fit, and how tall they stand

The cup at the top takes a standard taper candle, about 2.2 cm (7/8 in) across. Thinner tapers may need a little candle adhesive to stand straight.

  • Height: each holder stands between 15 and 20 cm (5.9 to 7.9 in), and heights are mixed within a set.
  • Shape: a flared cup, a wide rim at mid height and a broad foot.
  • Weight: about 0.5 kg (1.1 lb) for a pair.

Pair, set of three or set of four

All sets mix heights between 15 and 20 cm (5.9 to 7.9 in), which is what gives a table its staggered candlelight.

  • Pair: a mantel, a console or a small dining table.
  • Set of three: a cluster on a sideboard or a coffee table.
  • Set of four: the length of a dining table, or two pairs for two rooms.

Tamegroute candle holders make a host gift or a housewarming gift with a story behind it. Gift wrapping with a note can be added after purchase.

  • Put the candle out before the flame reaches the holder.

Questions

What size candle fits?

A standard taper candle, about 2.2 cm (7/8 in) across, fits the cup at the top of each holder. Thinner tapers may need a little candle adhesive to stand straight. Candles are not included.

How tall is each candle holder?

Each holder stands between 15 and 20 cm tall (5.9 to 7.9 in). Every set mixes heights within that range, so the candles sit at staggered levels on the table.

Why are the holders in a set not identical?

Each one is shaped by hand and glazed in Tamegroute, so the height, the branch stubs and the way the ochre glaze pools and speckles differ from piece to piece. No two are alike.

What is Tamegroute pottery?

Tamegroute pottery is glazed ceramic made in Tamegroute, a village in the Draa valley about 20 km from Zagora in southern Morocco. These holders are shaped by hand there by Abdelhak Az.

Will the base scratch my table?

Our artisan team reports that the base does not scratch tables. The underside is unglazed clay, so make sure it is clean and dry before you set it on a polished surface.

How do I remove candle wax?

Let the wax harden fully, then lift it off gently. Wash the holder by hand with lukewarm water and dry it straight away. Avoid abrasive cleaners, the dishwasher and sudden changes of temperature.

Are candles included?

No. Candles are not included. Each holder takes a standard taper candle, about 2.2 cm (7/8 in) across, which you can find at most home stores.

Who made them, and where?

Abdelhak Az. makes these candle holders by hand in Tamegroute, Morocco. Kilimy verified the maker and the village, and both are recorded on the Origin Passport that ships with every order.

Even more beautiful in person

The pieces look even more beautiful in person, especially when they are lit. The fact that you noticed the crack during your final quality check and chose to replace the piece rather than send it to me says a lot about the standards you have for your work. The letter from you and the certificate of verified origin were also a wonderful touch.
