One tile carries two blues. Look at a single piece and the glaze runs near-navy along one edge, then breaks into a lighter teal where it thinned during firing, with a hard gloss over the deep areas and a matte drag where it pulled away. Nobody chose that boundary. It happened in the kiln. Multiply it across twenty-five tiles and a wall becomes a surface that reads differently from every angle and at every hour dark and saturated in low light, opening into blue-green where the light hits directly. This is Fès, where zellige has been made from local clay for centuries. Twenty-five tiles at 10×10cm, covering 50×50cm.

What Makes It

  • The variation happens inside one tile, not just between tiles the glaze pools and thins across a single 10cm square. This is the difference between a handmade zellige wall and a blue tile wall, and it's the reason zellige is specified by designers who could use anything.
  • Deep blue is the hardest colour to fake a printed tile gives you one flat blue. Here the pigment sits in a glaze that moves, so the same colour reads as five colours depending on thickness and light.
  • Irregular edges the tiles are not machine-trimmed to a uniform square. That slight variance is what gives a laid zellige wall its handmade line rather than a printed grid.
  • Works dark or bright full walls in a bathroom or shower, kitchen backsplash, fireplace surround, or as a border against plaster. Deep blue against brass fittings is the classic Moroccan pairing.
  • Sold in 50×50cm panels 25 tiles, 0.25m² of coverage. Order the panel count you need and add 10–15% for cuts and breakage, as with any tile.

The Craft

Zellige begins as clay dug from the ground around Fès, shaped, dried in the sun, then fired. The glaze is applied by hand and fired again, and what comes out is a range rather than a match the same glaze on the same clay in the same kiln produces variation the potter cannot fully direct. Moroccan tile setters have worked with that range for centuries; the pattern language of zellige exists because craftsmen learned to compose with variation instead of against it. The imperfection is not tolerated. It is the material.

Before You Order

Order a sample first. Colour and texture vary between batches, and a screen cannot show you how the glaze moves. Buying a sample before a full order is standard practice with handmade tile and it will tell you more than any photograph.

Zellige needs an installer who has worked with handmade tile before. The thickness variation means it does not set like a factory tile, and the result depends heavily on how it's laid. We recommend a professional.

Even more beautiful in person

The pieces look even more beautiful in person, especially when they are lit. The fact that you noticed the crack during your final quality check and chose to replace the piece rather than send it to me says a lot about the standards you have for your work. The letter from you and the certificate of verified origin were also a wonderful touch.
