Amber is the colour that moves most across a wall. On a single tile the glaze runs honey-pale at one corner and deepens to rust at the other, with a high-gloss patch where it pooled thick and a softer matte drag where it pulled thin. Multiply that across twenty-five tiles and the surface reads like light on water — warm and shifting rather than one flat colour. Turn a tile over and you find the pale clay body it's made from, hand-formed, edges slightly off square. This is Fès, where zellige has been produced this way for centuries. What Makes It

• Two tones inside every tile — honey where the glaze sat thin, rust where it pooled. The transition happens across a single 10cm square, which is what makes an amber zellige wall read as depth rather than as a colour choice.
• The gloss is uneven — high-shine in places, soft and matte in others, depending on glaze thickness. It's why this catches window light across a whole wall instead of reflecting flatly.
• Hand-formed body, visible at the back — pale clay, formed by hand, with thickness varying across a single tile and edges that aren't a true square. That irregularity is what gives a laid zellige wall its handmade line.
• The warmest colourway in the range — amber does what white and blue can't: it makes a room feel lit even without direct sun. Fireplace surrounds, feature walls, and backsplashes in north-facing kitchens.
• Sits with terracotta, oak, and unlacquered brass — the warm tones pick up warm materials directly rather than sitting against them.
• Sold in 50×50cm panels — 25 tiles, 0.25m² of coverage. Order the panel count you need and add 10–15% for cuts and breakage, as with any tile.

The Craft

Zellige begins as clay dug from the ground around Fès, formed by hand, dried in the sun, then fired. The glaze is applied by hand and fired again, and what comes out is a range rather than a match — the same glaze on the same clay in the same kiln produces variation the potter cannot fully direct. Moroccan tile setters have worked with that range for centuries; the pattern language of zellige exists because craftsmen learned to compose with variation instead of against it. The imperfection is not tolerated. It is the material.

Before You Order

Order a sample first. Colour and texture vary between batches, and a screen cannot show you how the glaze moves. Buying a sample before a full order is standard practice with handmade tile and it will tell you more than any photograph.

Zellige needs an installer who has worked with handmade tile before. The thickness variation means it does not set like a factory tile, and the result depends heavily on how it's laid. We recommend a professional.

Care

Seal after installation as recommended by your installer. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid acidic or abrasive products, which will damage the glaze.
