Red Safi Ceramic Bowl Set of 4 — Handmade with Metal Filigree

Safi sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast and has been the country's ceramics capital for six centuries. These four bowls were thrown on a wheel there, glazed a red that runs deep rather than bright, then handed to a second craftsman who cut the metalwork by hand and fitted it to each curve individually. That is why the filigree sits flush against the clay instead of floating above it — the metal was shaped to the bowl, not the other way around. Hold one and you feel the weight first: heavier than it looks, cool at the rim, the raised scrollwork catching under your thumb.

What Makes It

• Two crafts in one object — the ceramic and the metalwork are made by different hands in different workshops, then fitted together. The bowl is finished twice before it's finished once.
• Hand-cut filigree, not stamped — each band of openwork is pierced and shaped by hand, which is why the diamond pattern shifts slightly from bowl to bowl across the set.
• Thrown on a wheel, not moulded — run a finger around the inside and you'll find the faint spiral of the throwing. A slight asymmetry between the four is the proof, not the flaw.
• Deep red glaze, fired to a hard gloss — the interior reflects light like still water. The colour is in the glaze, not painted on top, so it won't wear at the rim.
• Safe for food and drink — glazed interior, food-safe throughout. Serve harira, olives, dates, dips, or drink from it directly.

The Craft

Safi's potters work with clay dug from the region and fired in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. Throwing a bowl this size to a consistent wall thickness takes years to learn — the wall has to be thin enough to feel refined and thick enough to hold heat without cracking. The metalwork is a separate discipline entirely: the craftsman cuts, pierces, and hammers the band, then forms it around the fired bowl while the piece is in his hands, adjusting as he goes. Neither skill transfers to the other. Two masters, one object.

Hand wash with warm water and mild soap. Dry the metal immediately with a soft cloth. Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe — the metal trim will spark.
