About this piece
A Lantern That Paints the Room
When Azeroual lights one of these lanterns in his Marrakech workshop, the walls turn amber, crimson, and green. That is not an accident — it is the point. Each panel of colored glass is hand-cut and set into a copper frame shaped like a Moorish arch, the same arch that has defined Moroccan architecture for eight centuries. The pierced copper dome on top throws geometric shadow patterns upward while the glass body floods the room with color. Two objects in one — a lantern and a light installation.
What Makes It
- Hand-cut stained glass panels — each colored panel individually cut and set into the copper frame, which is why the light that passes through it has depth, not flatness
- Moorish arch glass motif — the keyhole arch pressed into every glass panel is drawn directly from the architecture of Marrakech's medina, visible in its mosques, riads, and souks
- Pierced copper dome — the top half is hand-pierced copper that throws geometric shadow patterns onto the ceiling while the glass body casts color below
How to Care for It
Wipe the glass with a soft, dry cloth. For the copper frame, use a damp cloth and dry immediately to preserve its patina. Use a tea light or LED candle inside — never leave a flame unattended.
