The Kilimy Moroccan leather pouf is a round, hand-stitched pouf in two tones, natural undyed leather and one color, with gold painted motifs. It is made in Fes, Morocco, by Elhaj Ah. It ships unfilled in two low sizes: about 42 x 22 cm (16.5 x 8.7 in) and 50 x 25 cm (19.7 x 9.8 in) when filled.

You fill it at home through a zipper on the base, then use it as a footrest, a low seat or an accent, in one of ten colors. Each pouf ships from Morocco with a Kilimy Origin Passport naming its maker, and duties and taxes are included on US orders.

Which size to choose

Both sizes of this Moroccan leather pouf are low poufs. Most Moroccan poufs stand 30 to 36 cm (12 to 14 in) high, so these sit lower than usual.

  • 42 x 22 cm (16.5 x 8.7 in): a footrest by an armchair, or a low seat for a small room or a reading corner.
  • 50 x 25 cm (19.7 x 9.8 in): a living room footrest, an occasional low seat, or floor seating at a coffee table.

How it is made and who makes it

A Moroccan leather pouf, also called a pouf ottoman or, in the UK, a pouffe, is a round cushion of stitched leather panels that is filled at home and used as a footstool or low seat. This one is made in Fes, Morocco, by Elhaj Ah. The leather panels are stitched together by hand in two tones, and the gold motifs are painted onto the leather. Each pouf is made by hand from natural hides, so color, grain and motifs vary slightly.

The maker describes it this way: "These poufs have been designed to make the gathering around a meal or a conversation comfy while delivering on the looks as well."

Kilimy has verified the maker and the city. Both are recorded on the Origin Passport that ships with every pouf.

What arrives, how to fill it and how to care for it

This Moroccan leather pouf arrives flat and unfilled, so the first step is to fill it through the zipper on the base. Household textiles such as old towels, clothes and blankets give the firmest filling. Calculated from its filled dimensions, the 42 cm pouf holds up to about 30 liters (1.1 cubic feet) and the 50 cm pouf up to about 49 liters (1.7 cubic feet).

  • Wipe the leather with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use harsh cleaners, and do not use leather conditioner on the gold motifs.
  • Use the pouf indoors, out of direct sun and away from damp.
  • Leather softens and gains character with use.

Questions

Does this Moroccan pouf come filled?

No. The pouf arrives flat and unfilled, with a zipper on the base. Filling is not included, so you fill it at home with household textiles.

What do I fill a Moroccan pouf with?

Old towels, clothes, bed linen and blankets give the firmest, longest-lasting filling. Polyester fiberfill is lighter but flattens under regular sitting. Pack the outer edge first, then the center, and top it up after a few days.

Does a new leather pouf smell?

Yes, at first. New leather has a natural scent that is strongest when the parcel is opened. Leave the pouf unzipped in a ventilated room for a few days and the scent fades as it airs.

Is this pouf real leather?

Yes. The pouf is genuine leather, mainly sheep and cow leather, and the hide varies from one pouf to the next. It is not faux leather.

Can an adult sit on this pouf?

Yes, when it is filled firmly, according to its maker. The seat is low: about 22 cm (8.7 in) high on the 42 cm pouf and about 25 cm (9.8 in) high on the 50 cm pouf.

Is the gold painted or stitched, and does the color rub off?

The gold motifs are painted, not stitched or embroidered. In a rub test with a white cloth on the dyed leather and on the gold, nothing came off.

Even more beautiful in person

The pieces look even more beautiful in person, especially when they are lit. The fact that you noticed the crack during your final quality check and chose to replace the piece rather than send it to me says a lot about the standards you have for your work. The letter from you and the certificate of verified origin were also a wonderful touch.
