About this piece

Thirty-six centimetres across — wide enough that a whole orange and walnut salad for six sits on it with the painted border still showing. That border is the work: a repeating scalloped band of cobalt run around the full circumference by hand, each arch drawn freehand, each one landing slightly differently than the last. This is Safi on Morocco's Atlantic coast, where the blue-and-white tradition has been worked for six centuries. The glaze fires to a hard gloss, so the plate catches light at the rim and holds the blue deep and wet-looking in the well.

What Makes It

  • Painted freehand, no stencil — follow the scalloped border around and the arches vary in width and spacing. A machine would repeat them exactly. The hand does not, and that irregularity is the proof of what this is.
  • Built for the centre of a table — at 36cm this is a serving piece, not a dinner plate. Salad, couscous, fruit, mezze, a whole roast chicken. It's the plate everything else arranges around.
  • Deep cobalt, fired under glaze — the blue sits beneath the glaze layer rather than painted on top, so it won't scratch, fade, or wear at the edge where serving spoons land.
  • Reads as wall art when it's off the table — the border pattern is graphic enough to hang. A 36cm painted plate holds a wall the way a small framed piece cannot.
  • Safe for serving food — glazed throughout and safe for direct contact with food. Not for cooking, oven, or open flame.

The Craft

Safi's potters dig their clay from the surrounding region and fire it in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. Throwing a plate this wide without warping is a skill in itself — the clay has to be pulled flat and even across 36cm and then survive the kiln without cracking or sagging. The painting comes after, and it is the discipline that takes longest to learn: the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. Every arch in that border was drawn correctly the first time or the plate was not finished.
