Inspired by the lanterns found throughout Morocco's historic medinas and riads, this piece brings an unmistakable sense of place to contemporary interiors. Its clean vertical frame is balanced by the sculptural roof above, where hand-worked brass panels are decorated with traditional star and geometric motifs.

Once illuminated, the pierced details become part of the atmosphere, allowing light to escape through the carefully cut openings while the brass frame creates a warm architectural outline around the bulb. The result is less a conventional light fixture than a handcrafted decorative object—one that changes character from day to evening.

The Artisan Behind the Piece

In the medina workshops of Marrakech, El Hadj Ahmed has dedicated more than three decades to the art of Moroccan metalwork. Working with traditional tools and techniques, he shapes brass sheet through careful cutting, folding, hammering, piercing, and assembly.

Each decorative opening is created individually, requiring patience and a steady hand to maintain the rhythm and balance of the geometric composition. The brass is then formed into the lantern's architectural structure, with reinforced corners and carefully finished edges giving the piece both presence and durability.

The marks of this process remain visible in the finished object. Slight variations in the surface, tone, alignment, and detailing are natural characteristics of handmade brasswork and help distinguish an artisan-made piece from a mass-produced reproduction.

Designed Around the Light

The open construction allows the bulb to remain visible, making the light source an intentional part of the design. Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. For gentle cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth and dry the brass immediately afterward. Avoid abrasive sponges, steel wool, harsh chemical cleaners, and prolonged exposure to water, as these can scratch or alter the natural finish.

If you wish to preserve the brighter golden appearance, use a suitable brass polish sparingly and according to the product's instructions. If you prefer the deeper character of aged brass, simply allow the natural patina to develop.

Yes. Every piece is made by hand and carries an Origin Passport recording its city and craft. The maker is named when they have agreed to it.

How are the makers paid?
