Moroccan Brass Pendant Light | Handmade in Marrakesh

A Moroccan brass pendant shade is a hanging ceiling light fixture with a perforated metal shade that projects patterned shadow across the walls and ceiling around it. This one is pierced by hand in Marrakech from brass at thickness, and comes in three diameters: 35 cm, 45 cm and 55 cm, in five finishes. The shade is supplied on its own. Cable, lampholder, chain and bulb are fitted on arrival by your electrician.

How the perforations cast patterns

A perforated shade casts patterns because each hole acts as its own small opening, projecting a spot of light onto whatever surface it reaches. Because the shade is curved, those spots spread apart as they travel, so the pattern grows larger and looser the further it lands from the lamp. On a ceiling two feet above the fixture the pattern is tight and bright. On a wall eight feet away it is wide and soft.

Three things change the result, and only one of them is the shade.

The bulb matters more than anything else. A clear bulb with a visible filament behaves like a small point of light, and small sources cast sharp-edged shadows. A frosted or opal bulb spreads light across its whole surface, which blurs every edge and turns the pattern into a soft glow. If you want defined shapes on the ceiling, use a clear bulb. This is the most common reason people are disappointed by a pierced pendant, and it is a bulb choice, not a fault in the shade.

Room darkness sets the contrast. The pattern is always being cast. It becomes visible when the surrounding light is low enough for it to compete. In a bright room the shade reads as a lamp. In a dim room it reads as a projector.

Ceiling height sets the scale. Lower ceilings give a concentrated pattern directly above. Higher ceilings and stairwells throw a wide pattern that reaches the walls.

You receive the pierced brass shade. Nothing else is in the box.

Cable, lampholder, chain, ceiling canopy and bulb are fitted on arrival. This is how these shades have always been sold in Morocco, and it means the fitting can be matched to the wiring already in your ceiling rather than shipped with parts rated for a different market.

General interior guidance, not a Kilimy rule: a pendant over a dining table usually reads well at roughly half to two thirds the table's width, hung so the bottom of the shade sits about 75 to 90 cm above the tabletop. Over an island, the same height, spaced so the shades do not overlap. Total drop is set by the chain and cable your electrician fits, so you control it.

Every shade is punched individually, so hole placement and spacing vary slightly between pieces and the projected pattern is never identical twice. Overall dimensions vary within a few millimetres for the same reason. That variance comes from hand production and is not a defect.

Marrakech has a working brass and metalwork tradition, and pierced lighting is one of its oldest outputs. Each shade is raised into shape and then punched by hand, hole by hole, from the inside out.

Are the cable and lampholder included?

No. You receive the pierced brass shade on its own. Cable, lampholder, chain, canopy and bulb are fitted on arrival by an electrician, which lets the fitting match the wiring already in your ceiling.

Will it fit a standard lampholder?

The aperture at the top measures and accepts a standard lampholder. Give that figure and the shade weight to your electrician before installation.

Does it really cast patterns across the room, or only near the lamp?

Across the room. The pattern is tightest and brightest on surfaces close to the shade, usually the ceiling directly above, and spreads wider and softer as it travels to the walls. In a dim room a 45 cm shade will reach the far walls of an average dining room.

What bulb gives the sharpest shadows?

A clear bulb with a visible filament. Small, concentrated light sources cast hard-edged shadows. Frosted and opal bulbs spread light across a wider surface, which softens every edge and turns the pattern into a glow rather than a shape. Bulb choice changes the effect more than any other single factor.

What size should I choose for a dining table?
