Hand-painted Safi ceramic bowls from the Saada Workshop

These four hand-painted Safi ceramic bowls are made by Abdelhak Az. at the Saada Workshop on Potter's Hill in Safi, Morocco. Each bowl is hand-shaped from local terracotta clay, glazed directly with colored glazes and painted freehand. Choose one of two sizes. Large bowls are 14 cm across and 8 cm high (5.5 x 3.1 in) and hold about 17 fl oz (500 ml). Small bowls are 10 cm across and 5.5 cm high (3.9 x 2.2 in) and hold about 4.25 fl oz (125 ml). In Moroccan homes, bowls like these traditionally hold olives, honey, dips and spices.

How it's made

Every bowl in this set is shaped, glazed and painted by hand by Abdelhak Az. at the Saada Workshop on Potter's Hill in Safi, Morocco.

The clay. The bowls are made from terracotta clay sourced from the basins around Safi.
The shape. Each bowl is shaped by hand. That leaves a slight asymmetry, which is the mark of handmade work, not a flaw.
The glaze. Safi pieces are glazed directly with colored glazes.
The painting. The decoration is painted freehand, with no stencils. The artisan keeps to traditional motifs while bringing his own reading to them.
The firing. Each bowl is fired twice in a kiln. The first firing is at around 900 C (1652 F).
