About this piece
Solid brass, cut and pierced by hand. The backplate on each hook is a lattice — diamonds opening into diamonds, with the negative space cut out entirely rather than stamped as a relief. That openwork is the labour: every hole is pierced individually, then the edges are chased with a fine punched line you can feel with a fingernail. This is Fès, where brass has been worked in the same medina workshops for centuries. The metal is cool to the touch and warm to the eye — it catches light at the polished curve of the hook and goes soft and matte across the pierced ground.
What Makes It
- Pierced, not stamped — the lattice is cut through the brass by hand. Hold it to the light and the openings are true openings. A stamped hook would show identical holes on both pieces. These do not.
- Punched detailing along the edges — the fine dotted line running around the lattice is struck by hand with a punch, one strike at a time. Run a fingernail across it and you feel every mark.
- Solid brass, not plated — the colour goes all the way through. It will darken slowly with handling into a deeper tone, and it can always be polished back.
- The hook takes real weight — the arm is a thick curve, not a thin bent wire. Coats, heavy towels, bags. It holds.
- A pair that reads as a pair — hung side by side in an entryway or a bathroom, two of them do more than one. Mounted through the base of the hook arm.
The Craft
Fès brass work is done cold — the metal is cut, pierced, hammered, and chased by hand, without casting. A craftsman learns the punch work before he is allowed near the piercing, because a slip with a saw ruins the piece and a slip with a punch only marks it. Getting a lattice this fine to hold its shape without tearing takes years to learn. The knowledge is in knowing how far the brass will move before it fails.

Care
Wipe with a dry soft cloth. Polish with brass cleaner to restore shine, or leave it and let the brass darken naturally with handling. Avoid moisture on the mounting point in bathrooms.
