About this piece
A square plate is harder to make than a round one. The wheel gives you a circle — turning that into a square with softened corners means working the clay off-wheel by hand while it's still soft enough to move and firm enough to hold. Then the painter has to run a radiating pattern across a shape that has no consistent radius, so the petals stretch toward the corners and compress along the sides. He does it freehand. The two round plates that come with it, 21cm and 17cm, carry the same design language in teal, rust, and amber over white. This is Safi on Morocco's Atlantic coast, where the ceramic tradition has been worked for six centuries.
What Makes It
- Three shapes, one pattern family — a 23cm square and two rounds at 21cm and 17cm. They read as a set without being a matched trio, which is the point: the shapes do different jobs at the table and different jobs on a wall.
- The square is the hard one — shaped off the wheel by hand after throwing. Look at the corners and they're not identical to each other. A pressed plate would have four the same.
- Painted freehand, no stencil — count the petals radiating from the centre of each plate and the spacing drifts. The rust dashes and dotted fills land slightly differently every time. That's a brush, not a transfer.
- Built to hang as well as serve — three sizes in two shapes make a wall arrangement that doesn't look like a grid. The pattern is graphic enough to read from across a room.
- Colour under the glaze — the teal, rust, and amber are fired beneath the glaze layer, so nothing scratches off where cutlery lands or fades with washing.
- Food safe throughout — glazed and safe for direct contact. Salad, mezze, bread, pastry, or a full plated course.
The Craft
Safi's potters dig their clay from the surrounding region and fire in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. Painting is the discipline that takes longest to learn — a painter spends years on borders before he is trusted with a centre motif, because the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. There is no erasing. On the square plate the difficulty compounds: the pattern has to look balanced on a shape where the distance from centre to edge changes constantly. Every stroke across these three pieces was placed correctly the first time.
