About this piece
Every line on these seven plates was painted by hand with a brush, one at a time, with no stencil and no transfer. Look at the six small plates stacked together and you can see it — the dot work runs at slightly different spacing on each, the scalloped edges break at slightly different points. The painter works from memory: the pattern lives in his hand, not on paper. This is Safi, Morocco's ceramics capital, where the blue-and-white tradition has been worked for six centuries. The 31cm platter anchors the table; the six 16cm plates sit around it.
What Makes It
- Painted freehand, brush by brush — the dots, the scrollwork, the triangular centre motif are all applied by hand. Set two plates side by side and the differences are visible. That variation is the signature of hand-painting.
- A full service in one set — one 31cm platter for the centre of the table and six 16cm plates for bread, pastry, mezze, or dessert. Seven pieces, sized to work together.
- Scalloped rims, cut by hand — the wavy edge is shaped while the clay is still soft, which is why the peaks and valleys don't repeat with machine regularity around the circumference.
- Cobalt on white, fired under glaze — the blue sits beneath the glaze layer rather than on top of it, so the pattern won't scratch off or fade with washing.
- Layered like a table setting, stores like a stack — the six plates nest inside each other and inside the platter, which matters when you're storing a seven-piece set in a normal kitchen.
The Craft
Safi's potters dig their clay from the surrounding region and fire it in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. The painting is the part that takes longest to learn — a painter spends years on simple borders before he's given a centre motif, because the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. There is no erasing. Every stroke on these seven pieces is a stroke that was committed to on the first attempt.
