Hand-Painted Safi Ceramic Coffee Cups — Set of 6

Moroccan coffee is not served alone. It arrives on a tray, in six small cups, and the pouring is part of it. These are those cups — seven centimetres tall, no handle, straight-sided with a slight flare at the rim. You hold one around the middle, warm your fingers on it, and drink before it cools. The painting runs in three bands: a striped border at the top with a dot inside each square, an arched motif around the belly, a solid ring at the foot. All six were painted by hand, which you can see in the way the black outline wavers where it meets the orange, and in how no two arches sit at quite the same width.

What Makes It

• Six cups, six sets of small differences — line them up and the dot spacing shifts, the arch motifs open a little wider on one than another. That variation across the set is the proof they were painted individually rather than printed.
• Sized for the hand, not the cupboard — 7cm tall and no handle. You wrap your fingers around the body, which is how it's meant to be held and part of why the coffee tastes different served this way.
• Six is the serving number — enough for a table, a tray, or guests arriving without notice. This is the quantity Moroccan coffee is actually poured in, not a number chosen for a product page.
• Works for espresso or for a shot — the volume sits right for a double espresso, a nous-nous, or a pour of something stronger. Not mugs. Cups with a specific job.
• Colour under the glaze — the orange, black, and white are fired beneath the glaze layer, so nothing lifts at the rim where your lip lands or fades with repeated washing.
• Stores in almost no space — six cups at 7cm take up less shelf than two mugs.

The Craft

Small pieces are harder to paint than large ones. There is no room to recover a wavering line and no blank space to hide it in — every stroke on a 7cm surface sits within a few millimetres of the last. The painter works freehand on unfired glaze, where a brush cannot be corrected once it touches down. There is no erasing. Six cups means the same three bands drawn correctly the first time, thirty-six times over.

Hand wash with warm water and mild soap. Avoid abrasive scourers on the painted surface. Not recommended for dishwasher or microwave. Safe for hot drinks.
