About this piece
Three pieces that stack into one place setting: a 20cm plate underneath, a 15cm plate on top of it, and a 12cm bowl in the centre. All three painted in the same cobalt by the same hand, on the same day, so the blue matches across the set the way it wouldn't if they'd been made separately. The pattern is drawn freehand — the fan motifs, the fine radiating lines, the touches of green and rust worked into the blue. Under the glaze it fires to a hard gloss and reads almost black at the rim, then opens into full blue where the light hits.
What Makes It
- A complete setting for one — 20cm dinner plate, 15cm side plate, 12cm bowl. Buy one for yourself, or buy four sets and you have a table for four in a colour that actually matches.
- Painted as a set, not assembled from stock — the three pieces share a glaze batch and a painter. The blue is consistent across all three, which is difficult to guarantee when hand-glazed pieces are pulled from different firings.
- Freehand pattern, no stencil — the fan motifs on the bowl and the border on the plates were drawn by hand. Look closely and the spacing shifts. A machine repeats. The hand does not.
- Three colours layered over cobalt — rust, green, and black picked out over the blue ground, all under the glaze, so nothing wears off at the edges where cutlery lands.
- Nests flat for storage — bowl inside the small plate, small plate inside the large. Three pieces take the space of one.
- Food safe throughout — glazed and safe for direct contact with food. Serving and eating, not cooking.
The Craft
Marrakech's potters throw on a wheel and fire in kilns that have stood in the same workshops for generations. The painting is the discipline that takes longest to learn — a painter spends years on rim work and borders before he is trusted with a centre motif, because the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. There is no erasing and no second attempt. Every line across these three pieces was committed to the first time.
