About this piece
The star at the centre of each bowl was drawn by hand, point by point, and the fine hairline detail inside it — the feathered strokes filling every arm of the star — was worked in afterwards with the brush's finest edge. That detail is where the hours go. These come from Marrakech, where the pottery workshops sit behind the medina walls and the painters work in amber, rust, and black over a warm ochre ground. At 21cm across, each bowl is wide and shallow: the pattern stays fully visible even when the bowl is in use.
What Makes It
- Painted freehand, no stencil — set the two bowls one on top of the other and the stars don't align. The arms sit at slightly different angles, the petal motifs around the rim fall in different places. That's the hand, not a machine.
- Feathered linework at the centre — the fine parallel strokes inside each star arm are applied individually with the tip of the brush. This is the slowest part of the painting and the first thing that separates a master from an apprentice.
- Wide and shallow, 21cm — the pattern reads even with food in it. Serve olives, salad, couscous for one, or fruit. Shallow enough to work as a catch-all on a console or a dresser.
- Amber ground, rust and black over it — three colours layered rather than one flat fill, with a black line finishing the rim. The colour is under the glaze, so it won't wear off at the edge.
- Sold as a pair — two bowls that share a pattern but not a copy of it. Stack them, or set them opposite each other.
- Food safe throughout — glazed interior, safe for serving and eating.
The Craft
Marrakech's potters throw on a wheel and fire in kilns that have stood in the same workshops for generations. The painting is the discipline that takes longest — a painter spends years on borders and rim work before he is trusted with a centre motif, because the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired surface. There is no erasing. The star on each of these bowls was drawn correctly the first time or not at all.
