About this piece

Eight pieces, one painter, one glaze batch. That's the part that's hard to buy any other way — a platter, a three-litre pitcher, and six cups that actually match, because they were painted together rather than assembled from stock. This is the full couscous service: the platter holds the dish at the centre, the pitcher pours, the six cups go round the table. Cobalt on white throughout, drawn freehand — panels, dotted fields, crosshatched lozenges, a scalloped border on the platter that runs the whole circumference. This is Morocco's blue-and-white tradition, worked for six centuries.

What Makes It

  • Eight pieces that genuinely match — same painter, same glaze batch, same firing. Matching hand-glazed ceramic is difficult to guarantee when pieces come from different runs, which is why buying a set together is not the same as buying eight pieces separately.
  • A complete service, not a starter — platter, pitcher, and six cups covers a full table. Nothing else needs sourcing to use it.
  • Three-litre pitcher with a thrown handle — the handle is pulled and attached by hand, which is the part of a pitcher most likely to fail if it's done badly. Lidded, so what's inside stays covered between pours.
  • Painted freehand, no stencil — line the six cups up and the panels don't align. Dot fields drift, lozenges vary in width. That variation across eight pieces is the proof of a hand rather than a transfer.
  • Colour under the glaze — fired beneath the glaze layer on every piece, so the pattern won't scratch at the platter's centre where serving spoons land or wear at the cup rims.
  • Choose the colour at checkout — the full set is made in matching colourways. The pattern stays, the palette changes.

The Craft

Three different forms in one set, and each takes a different skill. The platter has to be pulled flat and wide without warping in the kiln. The pitcher has to be thrown tall, then have a handle pulled and joined at exactly the right moment in the drying — too early and it slumps, too late and it cracks off at the seam. The cups have to come up thin and even at a size that gives the potter almost nothing to hold. Then it all goes to the painter, who works freehand on unfired glaze where a brush cannot be corrected once it touches down. Eight pieces means eight chances to lose the set, and no way to redo a stroke.
