About this piece
No painted pattern on these — the glaze is the pattern. It goes on thick and then breaks during firing into a mottled surface where the colour pools deep in some places and thins almost to white in others. That happens in the kiln, not on the workbench, which means the potter controls the recipe and the thickness but not the exact result. Four cups from the same batch will each break differently. Seven centimetres tall, four across, no handle — straight-sided with a slight flare at the lip and a raised ring around the middle where your fingers naturally land. This is Fès, where clay has been worked in the same medina workshops for centuries.
What Makes It
- The glaze decides, not the painter — the mottling comes from how the glaze moves and breaks in the kiln. Line the four up and compare them: same recipe, four different surfaces. Nobody, including the potter, knew exactly how they'd come out.
- Sized for the hand, not the cupboard — 7cm tall, 4cm across, no handle. You wrap your fingers around the body and rest them on the raised ring. That ring isn't decoration; it's where the cup tells your hand where to hold it.
- Four is the serving number — enough for a table or a tray. Moroccan coffee and tea are poured for a group, and this is the quantity they're poured in.
- Works for coffee, tea, or a shot — the volume sits right for an espresso, a nous-nous, or a pour of something stronger. Small on purpose.
- Colour all the way through the glaze — fired, not applied on top, so nothing lifts at the rim where your lip lands or fades with washing.

The Craft
Throwing at this scale is harder than it looks. A 4cm cylinder gives a potter almost nothing to hold onto — the walls have to come up thin and even in a few seconds of work, and there's no room to correct a lean once it starts. Fès potters fire in kilns that have been in the same families for generations, and the glaze recipes are part of what gets passed down. Knowing how thick to lay a glaze so it breaks into a mottle instead of running off or going flat is knowledge that took decades to accumulate and can't be read off a chart.
