About this piece
Every surface on this tap has been cut into. The spout carries a running pattern of chiselled lines and punched dots that follow its curve down to the mouth. The backplate is a scalloped disc worked with a zigzag border and fine hatching between the points. Even the collar behind the handle is faceted by hand. None of it is cast — the pattern was struck into solid brass with a chisel and a punch, one mark at a time, which is why the dots vary slightly in depth and the lines have a raised burr you can feel with a thumbnail. This is Fès, where brass has been worked in the same medina workshops for centuries. The metal is heavy for its size, cool to the touch, and throws warm light back across whatever tile sits behind it.
What Makes It
- Engraved, not cast — a cast tap would repeat its pattern identically on every unit. Look at the punched dots running down this spout and the spacing shifts. That's a hand and a punch, not a mould.
- Solid brass through the body — not plated, not brass-finished steel. The colour goes all the way through, so a scratch doesn't reveal another metal underneath and the whole thing can be polished back at any point.
- Cross handle, quarter-turn feel — the handle is a solid brass cross, weighted enough that it turns with resistance rather than spinning loose. It's the part of the tap you touch every day, and it's the part where cheap fittings give themselves away first.
- The scalloped backplate does the work — it covers the wall penetration and carries the engraving that makes this read as an object rather than a fitting. Against zellige or plain plaster, it's the detail that holds the eye.
- It will darken, and that's the point — unlacquered brass takes on a deeper tone with water and handling, settling unevenly and holding light in the engraved lines. Polish it and it goes bright again. Both are correct.
The Craft
Fès brass is worked cold — no furnace, no mould, the metal shaped and marked entirely by hand tools. Engraving is the discipline that takes longest to learn, because a chisel cannot be reversed. There is no filling a line that went wrong and no starting the panel again. A craftsman spends years on simple borders before he is trusted with a curved surface like this spout, where the pattern has to stay even as the shape falls away beneath the tool. Every mark on this tap was placed correctly on the first pass.
