About this piece

The pattern on these is cut, not painted. A band of diamonds and arches carved into the clay with a tool while it was still soft enough to take a line, then the incision filled with a darker pigment that settles into the groove and sits below the glaze. Run a thumb across it and you can feel where the surface drops. That's the difference between decoration applied to a bowl and decoration that is part of the bowl. Ten centimetres across, eight deep, glazed in a blue that pools darker at the rim and lightens where the wall curves. This is Safi on Morocco's Atlantic coast, where clay has been worked for six centuries.

What Makes It

  • Carved, not painted — the pattern is incised into the clay body and the colour fills the cut. It cannot scratch off, because there is nothing sitting on the surface to scratch. Feel the band with a thumbnail and the line has depth.
  • Four bowls, four sets of small differences — the carving is done freehand, so the diamonds vary in width and the arches sit at slightly different heights around each bowl. Line them up and it's visible.
  • 10cm across, 8cm deep — the everyday size — a portion of harira, a serving of olives, cereal, yoghurt, dips, or a scoop of ice cream. Deep enough to hold, small enough to cup in a palm.
  • The glaze breaks over the carving — where the glaze runs over an incised line it thins and darkens, which is why the pattern reads more strongly at the rim than at the base. That's the firing, not the painting.
  • Choose the colour at checkout — the carved band is in every colourway; only the glaze changes.
  • Food safe throughout — glazed interior, safe for serving and eating.

The Craft

Carving is a timing discipline. The clay has to be leather-hard — dry enough that a cut holds a clean edge, wet enough that the tool doesn't chip it. That window is short and a potter judges it by feel, not by clock. Cut too early and the line smears; too late and the edge crumbles. Safi's potters work clay dug from the surrounding region and fire in kilns that have been in the same families for generations, and this technique is among the things passed down within them. Four bowls means the same band cut cleanly four times, with no way to undo a slip.
