About this piece
In the medina workshops of Marrakech, Hajja Mina has spent nineteen years perfecting the ancient art of sabra weaving. "Textiles tell stories through every thread, every color, and every handmade detail," she says, her fingers moving across the wooden loom where cactus fibers transform into lustrous silk. This deep blue pillow carries the weight of that expertise, its surface rich with the subtle variations that only emerge from hand-spun yarn and natural dyes.
What Makes It
- Cactus silk construction — woven from sabra fibers, also known as vegetable silk
- Natural blue dyes — colors drawn from plants without chemical processing
- Geometric motifs — traditional patterns worked into the weave
- Hand-tied tassels — multicolored corner details that anchor the heavy fabric
The Craft
Each thread begins as fiber from the prickly pear cactus, spun by hand into silk-like strands. Hajja Mina works these into her loom, creating the subtle slubs and irregularities that mark genuine handwork. The blue comes from vegetable dyes, steeped and set using methods passed down through generations of Marrakech artisans.
Details
The 24-inch square showcases the natural character of hand-woven sabra — notice the gentle variations in tension and color that no machine can replicate. A zipper closure keeps the cover secure. Care note: Cactus silk requires dry cleaning only, as water will cause the natural dyes to run.
