About this piece
In the labyrinthine souks of Marrakech, El Hadj Ahmed has spent thirty-one years perfecting the ancient art of brass engraving. His star lanterns begin as sheets of gleaming metal, transformed through patient hand-carving into geometric frames that cradle panels of textured glass. When lit, each lantern becomes a constellation—casting intricate shadows that dance across walls while filling rooms with the soft, honeyed glow that has warmed Moroccan homes for centuries.
What Makes It
- Hand-engraved brass frames shaped using traditional metalworking techniques
- Textured glass panels that diffuse light into gentle, geometric patterns
- Moravian star design reimagined through North African craftsmanship
- Multi-dimensional shadows that transform any space into an atmospheric sanctuary
The Craft
Ahmed's process honors generations of Marrakech metalworkers. Each brass panel is hand-cut and engraved with traditional tools, then carefully soldered to create the lantern's distinctive star shape. The textured glass—available in clear, green, or blue—is fitted panel by panel, ensuring the light filters through with just the right warmth and complexity.
