About this piece
Twenty-one centimetres tall, which is the size that takes a mature pothos or a small fiddle leaf without either looking wrong. The outside is drawn entirely by brush: a band of dots, a lattice of crosshatched squares, an arched panel with a fine sprig of leaves inside it, a ring at the foot and another at the lip. The interior is glazed in a contrasting tone that shows at the rim — a detail most people miss until the pot is in their hands. This is Safi, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, where the ceramic tradition has been worked for six centuries. Pick the colour at checkout; the pattern stays, the palette changes.
What Makes It
- Drawn freehand, no stencil — set two of these side by side and the dot bands don't align, the crosshatch squares run at slightly different widths, the leaf sprigs open differently. That variation is the whole proof.
- Two glazes, one pot — the painted exterior and the contrasting glazed interior are separate decisions made at separate stages. The inner colour catches light at the rim and warms the whole piece.
- 21cm is the useful size — tall enough to stand on the floor beside a chair, small enough for a shelf or a windowsill. It reads as an object, not just a container.
- The pattern holds its own — the geometry reads from across a room, and it stays legible once a plant is spilling over the rim, which is when most decorative pots disappear.
- Fully glazed inside — the interior is sealed, so water doesn't seep through the clay onto a shelf or a floor.
- Order more than one and they'll differ — same pattern, same painter, different hand movements. Two or three together read as a grouping rather than a matched set.
The Craft
Safi's potters dig their clay from the surrounding region and fire in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. The painting is what takes longest to learn — a painter spends years on borders and rim work before he is trusted with a centre panel, because the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. There is no erasing. Every dot in that band and every square in that lattice was placed correctly the first time.

Planting
No drainage hole, so plant into a nursery pot and set it inside rather than potting directly. Add a layer of pebbles at the base to keep roots clear of standing water. Indoor use — the glaze is not rated for freezing temperatures.
Care
Wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive scourers on the painted surface. Bring indoors before frost.
