About this piece
A Bridal Tradition Reimagined
This yellow pillow cover draws directly from the ceremonial handira tradition of Morocco's High Atlas Mountains. Handira blankets were once worn by Berber brides on their wedding day—symbols of happiness and fertility that took many months to complete. Each sequin and metal disc was sewn by hand, transforming native wool into a shimmering textile meant to bless new beginnings.
Kalthoum EJ., a specialist in handwoven wool textiles working from her Tiznit workshop, has queued this design for production. Her interpretation honors the original's hand-loomed structure, fringing, and embellishments, while bringing her own weaving heritage to every detail. The sequins and metal discs will be applied one by one, just as they were generations ago.
Materials & Technique
- Native wool, hand-loomed on a traditional loom
- Sequins and metal discs hand-sewn individually
- Fringe detailing faithful to vintage handira construction
- Produced in Tiznit by Kalthoum EJ.
