About this piece
Square bowls are made twice. The wheel gives a circle — turning that into a square with rounded corners means working the clay by hand after throwing, while it's soft enough to move and firm enough to keep its shape. You can see the result in the profile: the rim rises and dips slightly where the corners are, so the bowl reads as a wave from the side rather than a flat line. Then the painting, drawn freehand across a form with no consistent radius, petals stretching toward the corners and compressing along the sides. Twenty-one centimetres across, twelve deep. This is Safi on Morocco's Atlantic coast, where the ceramic tradition has been worked for six centuries.
What Makes It
- Shaped off the wheel by hand — thrown round, then squared while still wet. Compare the two bowls corner to corner and they don't match. A moulded bowl would give you four identical corners twice over.
- The rim moves — because the square is formed by hand, the lip rises at the corners and falls along the sides. From the side it reads as a curve. That's the shaping, not a defect.
- Painted freehand, no stencil — count the petals radiating from the centre and the spacing drifts. The rust dashes and dotted fills land differently on each. That's a brush working across a shape that changes under it.
- 21cm across, 12cm deep — deep enough for salad, soup, or fruit for two or three, wide enough that the pattern stays visible with food in it.
- Works on a wall as well as a table — the graphic centre motif reads from across a room, and a square hangs differently from a round plate. Two of them break up an all-circular arrangement.
- Colour under the glaze — fired beneath the glaze layer, so nothing scratches off where a spoon lands or fades with washing.
The Craft
Safi's potters dig their clay from the surrounding region and fire in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. Squaring a thrown form is a timing problem more than a strength one — too wet and the walls slump, too dry and they crack at the corner. The window is narrow and the potter judges it by feel. Painting compounds the difficulty: the pattern has to look balanced on a shape where the distance from centre to edge changes constantly, and the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. There is no erasing. Every stroke on these two bowls was placed correctly the first time.
