Hand-Painted Safi Ceramic Tagine — 21cm Serving Dish

The cone is the hard part. Throwing a tagine lid means pulling clay upward into a tall narrow spire that has to stay true all the way to the knob without collapsing under its own weight — and then it has to sit flush on a base thrown separately. After that comes the painting, which runs over a curved surface that falls away under the brush the whole time. Petals, dotted fields, fine radiating lines, a black ring at the collar. All of it drawn freehand. This is Safi on Morocco's Atlantic coast, where the ceramic tradition has been worked for six centuries. Twenty-one centimetres across, glazed to a hard gloss inside and out, and made for the table rather than the flame.

What Makes It

• Serving and display, not cooking — this is a glazed decorative tagine. It holds couscous, olives, bread, or sugar at the table and looks right on a shelf when it's empty. It does not go on a stove, in an oven, or over coals.
• Painted freehand on a curve — the lid's slope means the brush is working on a surface that drops away with every stroke. Look at where the petals meet the collar and the spacing shifts. A transfer print would land identically every time.
• Two pieces thrown to meet — the base and the cone are made separately and have to seat cleanly against each other. Lift the lid and set it back down; that fit is a wheel skill, not a mould.
• Colour under the glaze — the pattern is fired beneath the glaze layer, so it won't scratch off where the lid meets the base or fade with washing.
• 21cm is the serving size — big enough to hold a dish for two or three at the centre of a table, small enough to leave out permanently on a counter or shelf.
• Choose the colour at checkout — the pattern stays, the palette changes. Order two in different colours and they still read as a pair.

The Craft

Safi's potters dig their clay from the surrounding region and fire in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. Throwing the cone is among the more demanding forms on the wheel — the clay has to be pulled tall and thin without buckling, and it has to dry and fire without warping away from the base it was matched to. The painting is a separate discipline again: a painter spends years on borders before he is trusted with a lid panel, because the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. There is no erasing. Every line on this piece was drawn correctly the first time.

Hand wash with warm water and mild soap. Avoid abrasive scourers on the painted surface. Not for stovetop, oven, open flame, or microwave — this is a serving tagine, not a cooking vessel. Not recommended for dishwasher.
