About this piece
Black on white, painted freehand with a brush. Look at the six small bowls and you can see the hand at work — the dotted rims run at slightly different spacing on each, the crosshatched panels break at different angles, the petal motifs open a little wider on one than another. The painter carries the pattern in his hand, not on a stencil. This is Safi, Morocco's ceramics capital, where the tradition has been worked for six centuries. The 22cm bowl holds the centre; the six 13cm bowls sit around it.
What Makes It
- Painted freehand, brush by brush — every dot, line, and crosshatch is applied by hand with no stencil. Set two bowls side by side and the differences are visible. That variation is the signature of hand-painting.
- Works on the table or on the wall — the graphic black-and-white pattern reads from across a room, which is why these get hung as often as they get used. Seven bowls make a full wall arrangement, or a full table.
- Two sizes that do different jobs — the 22cm bowl serves salad, fruit, or bread for the table. The six 13cm bowls hold olives, nuts, harissa, dips, or a single portion of soup.
- High contrast, fired under glaze — the black sits beneath the glaze rather than on top, so the pattern won't scratch off or fade with washing.
- Food safe throughout — glazed interior, safe for serving and eating. Not decorative-only.
- Nests for storage — the six small bowls stack inside each other and inside the large one, which matters when you're storing seven pieces in a normal kitchen.
The Craft
Safi's potters dig their clay from the surrounding region and fire it in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. The painting is the part that takes longest to learn — a painter spends years on simple borders before he's trusted with a centre motif, because the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. There is no erasing and no second attempt. Every stroke on these seven pieces was committed to the first time.
