The painter carries the pattern in his hand, not on a stencil. This is Safi, Morocco's ceramics capital, where the tradition has been worked for six centuries. The Craft

Safi's potters dig their clay from the surrounding region and fire it in kilns that have been in the same families for generations. The painting is the part that takes longest to learn — a painter spends years on simple borders before he's trusted with a centre motif, because the brush cannot be corrected once it touches the unfired glaze. There is no erasing and no second attempt. Every stroke on these seven pieces was committed to the first time.

Hand wash with warm water and mild soap. Avoid abrasive scourers on the painted surface. Not recommended for dishwasher or microwave. Safe for serving and eating.
